Biography

Cellist Nagyeom Jang, praised for her 'warm and burnished sound' (Cleveland Classical), is dedicated to a life of collaboration across diverse artistic forms.

Through her music, Nagyeom seeks to explore what is closest to her voice and heart, bringing a 'superb tone and sensitive phrasing' (Kultur Regional) and an intimate human connection to every performance.

A seasoned soloist, Nagyeom made her orchestral debut at age nine with the Salzburg Chamber Orchestra. Her recent highlights include performing Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2024 Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition and appearing with the Baden-Baden Philharmonie as the winner of the G. Henle Verlag Urtext Prize. She was also a top prize winner at the International Davidov Cello Competition and has performed with the Korea National Symphony Orchestra and the Bravura Philharmonic. Recently, she was a semi-finalist at the 6th Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, China and Classic Cello International Competition in London.

As the Principal Cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra since 2022, Nagyeom has led the section at Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, and the Kennedy Center under distinguished conductors including John Adams, David Robertson, and Simone Young. Her 2025-2026 season includes a "Side by Side" performance with the New York Philharmonic and her Master’s Graduation Recital at Juilliard featuring works by J.S. Bach, Henriëtte Bosmans, and Robert Schumann.

Deeply committed to the intimacy of chamber music, Nagyeom is a founding member of the Amara Trio, Gold Prize winners at the 2024 Chesapeake International Chamber Music Competition. Since their formation at Kneisel Hall in 2023, the trio has shared their love for the art form at venues ranging from Alice Tully Hall in NYC to Prior-Jollek Hall in the Virgin Islands. The trio is part of Juilliard’s Honors Chamber Music Program, where they give recitals at Lincoln Center and across the country. The trio’s upcoming engagements include Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Reading Symphony Orchestra in the 2026-2027 season. Nagyeom’s devotion to chamber music has led Nagyeom to the world's most prestigious festivals, including upcoming residencies at Marlboro Music (2026–2027), as well as past summers at The Perlman Music Program and Taos School of Music.

At the forefront of her current creative work is the “0-zone Project,” an interdisciplinary series founded with her sister, visual artist Suhmi Jang. The project pairs visual art with live music, ranging from set design and sculpture to video art and paintings – curated by the artists themselves to broaden the traditional concert experience through multi-sensory storytelling. The series was launched in January 2025 with its inaugural show, "Back Home," in her hometown of Gangneung, South Korea. Following this debut, the project serves as a platform for free experimentation and shared inspiration, broadening the spectrum of the traditional concert experience through immersive storytelling.
